We are seeking for study in 2011 two Master’s candidates to take part in a FRST-funded research project in the School of Architecture, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
The two Master’s students who will be a key part of this research will become part of a growing group of students, working under the supervision of Professors Robert and Brenda Vale. This project will ultimately deliver two new graduates with skills in footprinting and systems approaches to sustainable development of communities.
The first project is linked to the Sustainable Living Project (www.sustainableliving.org.nz). This is an educational trust that has a file of changes people have made to their lives with the aim of trying to live more sustainably. The aim of this project is to take this raw data, categorise it, and work out the difference the changes make to the ecological footprint. The aim is to feed the results back to the Sustainable Living organisation for inclusion in new teaching material that will enable people to work out the footprints changes for themselves.
The second project will build on previous work that has looked at the potential for different suburban densities to be sustainable in terms of food, domestic energy, carbon sequestration, transport and waste (Ghosh et al, 2006). In this project typical rural New Zealand layouts and densities will be investigated and their potential for being sustainable calculated using a footprint approach. Results will be compared with those of the earlier suburban study.
Both scholarships will have a stipend of NZ$15,000 plus the equivalent of domestic tuition fees. Further information about these projects can be obtained from:
